Life as the Journey (Psalm 84, part 1)

Introduction: Psalm 84 is the picture of a journey in three phases: deciding, going, and arriving. You and I do not think about journeys or trips the same way they did when this Psalm was written. On my recent trip to Colorado, I took some time to drive out to the family cabin in Glen Haven. The cabin, named Kinnikinnik, was built in 1929 and has served as a summer destination for five generations. I landed at the Denver Airport and drove the 75 minutes to Glen Haven, hoping to find food there. Upon arriving in Glen Haven, I realized that the town was on vacation, there was no cell reception, and I was still hungry. You see, Glen Haven is not a one-stop light town. It is a “no-stop light town.” Now, I drove back the way I came and eat at In and Out for the first time so I wasn’t exactly roughing it. Travel for us is so easy that we expect wherever we go to have all sorts of supply options.

We do not often wrestle with the three questions when traveling:

  1. Should we go? Is it worth the risk to travel?
  2. Can we go? Do we have enough provisions?
  3. Will we go? Do we really want to exert the effort to travel?
